THE IJPC JOURNAL is an online academic journal that adheres to the highest standards of peer review. Its purpose is to further the mission of the Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture Project to investigate and analyze, through research and publication, the conflicting images of journalists in every aspect of popular culture, from film, television, radio, fiction, commercials, cartoons, comic books to music, art, humor and video games – demonstrating their impact on the public’s perception of journalist. The IJPC Journal is an interdisciplinary journal that, while centered in journalism, is open to contributions from many disciplines and research approaches, using a variety of methods and theoretical perspectives. Original investigation is expected, as well as clear, lucid writing and presentation. Manuscripts are now being accepted. IJPC CLASS SYLLABUS:
Syllabus for The Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture, USC Annenberg School class -- Journalism 375/Communication 372 -- Four Units -- Spring 2020. We believe this is the 21st century way to teach journalism history throught the prism of the image of the journalist in popular culture. It not only teaches students what journalism is all about, gets them excited about being a journalist, teaches them about the past, present and future of journalism, but it also shows them why without journalism, any democracy is doomed. Through the hundreds of film and television clips, students see journalism in action. They hear the great speeches about journalism performed by great actors portraying Edward R. Murrow, Ben Bradlee, Julius Reuters, and so many others. It sticks in their memory in ways the written word doesn't. There is also a secondary website on the ijpc.org website that keeps updating the book, Heroes and Scoundrels: The Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture, a 40-hour documentary that gives you hundreds of film and television clips for homework and class use, and the book itself. We also have weekly lecture notes with selected excerpts from the video to help you organize your class week-by-week. New film and television programs about journalists can easily be integrated into the class.
