"Front Page" and "Truth Searcher" Journalists: An Alternative Method of Categorizing Movie Journalists and Analyzing Narratives

Bariskan Unal

Abstract

This article proposes an alternative method of categorizing movie journalists based on how a journalist performs his or her job and adheres to professional principles. The article highlights two main character types in films in terms of the journalist’s stance and his or her conduct: “Front Page” and “Truth Searcher” journalists. These two character types are drawn from previous scholarly studies, journalistic principles, and two cornerstone journalism films in cinema history: The Front Page, which created ongoing journalist stereotypes, and All the President’s Men, which portrayed ideal journalists. This article also uncovers the journalistic archetypes, myths, discourses, and messages found in films by analyzing the films’ narrative structures. It examines three movies in this respect: Spotlight, Truth, and Nightcrawler, all of which were produced after 2010 and all of which feature a journalist as a main character.
